About the Director

picture of the directorDr. Charles F. Smith, Jr. recently retired after fourteen years as Vice President, Educational Coordinator, and School Representative for Salisbury Music & Instrument Repair, a full-service music store serving the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia as well as Sussex County, Delaware since 1983. An early resident of Texas and Louisiana, his education includes the Covington, LA High School Band, the BME degree from Southeastern Louisiana University, the MM from The Catholic University of America, and the Ed.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Navy School of Music and was stationed with the U.S. Naval Academy Band in Annapolis.

Prior to his last position, he was band director at James M. Bennett Senior High School in Salisbury for nine years and Associate Professor of Music at Salisbury State University for sixteen years, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1988. He currently keeps himself busy professionally as a charter member and principal percussionist of the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and as conductor of the Salisbury Community Band since 1974. He has been a member of the band since 1963. He served as orchestra director for the Magi Choral Festival for seven years, and many Salisbury Community Player's annual musical theater productions since 1968.

Dr. Smith has adjudicated band festivals in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia and has guest conducted the Sussex, DE All-County and Maryland and Virginia All-Shore Bands at both the Junior and Senior High levels. He last had the honor of conducting the Sussex County. Delaware Middle School honors band in February, 2008. All-Shore Band in April of 2003. He has served as President of the Eastern Shore Band Directors Association, Vice President of the Maryland Band Directors Association, and was a member of the College Band Directors National Association.
